Native American Studies: Magazines & Journals

The American Indian Law Review serves as a nationwide scholarly forum for analysis of developments in legal issues pertaining to Native Americans and indigenous peoples worldwide. Publishing two issues each year, AILR circulates in-depth articles by legal scholars, attorneys and other expert observers. In addition, the Review provides comments and notes written by student members and editors on a variety of Indian law-related topics.

The American Indian Quarterly is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal covering studies on the indigenous peoples of North and South America. It is published by the University of Nebraska Press and was established in 1974.

Founded in 1961, the Journal of American Indian Education (JAIE) is a journal featuring original scholarship on education issues of American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Indigenous peoples worldwide, including First Nations, Māori, Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander peoples, and Indigenous peoples of Latin America, Africa, and others.

Established at UCLA in 1969, the American Indian Studies Center has played an indispensable role in establishing American Indian Studies as a viable and relevant field of scholarship, teaching, community service, and public discourse. The centers has published the American Indian Culture and Research Journal (AICRJ) since 1971. The journal is an internationally renowned, multidisciplinary resource designed for scholars and the general public.

Synopsis: Featuring Native American art and culture, this award-winning quarterly also engages its readers with diverse articles about the fascinating and often overlooked histories of American Indian nations and the contemporary challenges facing Native peoples across the Western Hemisphere. From Alaska's Native villages to the Andean communities of South America, American Indian tells inspiring and enlightening stories illustrated with glorious photography. A special feature includes a showcase of the NMAI's current programs, events, and special exhibition or project themes.

Published through the University of Arizona since 1990, Red Ink is the only publication in the country that features solely the writing of Native students. The final edition features contributions of artists and writers from the Lakota nation including “Dancing With Words”—a young poets group, community members, and Red Ink’s exiting editorial board.

Studies in American Indian Literatures (SAIL) is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal published by the University of Nebraska Press on behalf of the Association for the Study of American Indian Literatures. SAIL is the only journal in the United States that focuses exclusively on American Indian literature. With a wide scope of scholars and creative contributors, the journal is on the cutting edge of activity in the field. SAIL defines "literatures" broadly to include all written, spoken, and visual texts created by Native peoples, and invites the submission of scholarly, critical pedagogical, and theoretical manuscripts focused on any aspect of American Indian literatures as well as poetry and short fiction, bibliographical essays, review essays, and interviews.

Native Peoples Magazine focus remains on the arts, culture, and lifeways of the Native peoples of the Americas, it also reports on topics related to business, health, education, politics, sports, travel in “Indian Country”, the environment, food, language, history and other subjects associated with Native American life past and present.
