Student Guide

Online learning takes certain and different skills than traditional education which consisted of an in-person instructor within a classroom setting. For web-based learning you will need to be more responsible for your academic achievements. In order to be successful in online courses you need to develop strong time management skills and be self-motivated. You also need dependable Internet access, basic computer skills, and the ability to communicate using modern technologies and tools. Will you find online courses challenging? Will you find the experience rewarding? To help answer these questions and decide whether or not you are a good candidate for online learning, you should do an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. Take the questionnaire below to see if you are ready for Internet-based instruction!

Interpreting the Results

A score of 68–100% addresses the crucial study skills needed for an online class. The most successful online students will have answered 'agree' to a majority of the questions or will work to address them over the course of the semester.

A score of 60–67% are also important for an online class, but many of the topics they address are things that don't automatically block a student's academic success in the class or can be remedied once the class begins.

A score of 0–59% is a strong indication that the student will likely face more challenges than may be desired in an online class. While online may not be the best choice at the moment, if still interested in being an online student, you should understand some of the challenges and what you need to do to overcome them. For additional help figuring out whether an online class is an option for you, consult a CWC advisor: 307-855-2117.
